Welcome to our new post! A new term started and our work in the NTYCX class started too. In this term we will have three deadlines, today we will start with the first one "Discover - Define".
Last classes we were working on Cryptography at Khan Academy. This work was about defining what the problem was and then discovering it. A code consolidated by letters were given to us and we solved them using “Cesar Cipher”. This is a tool that moves each letter a certain number of spaces in the alphabet. For example if a letter is moved three spaces in the alphabet and a B is used, the new letter will be E. So you try many times and when a coherent phrase come out, that is the keycode.
Below you will see many examples for “discover and define”.
Here you can watch a video about the Cesar cipher. If you want to informate you about this topic we recommend you to watch it.
Since 2 weeks we are working with a new topic in Khan Academy. This new topic is called “Cryptography”, you can see the topic in more detail with “Cryptography challenge 101”. Cryptography is an art or technique that was mostly used over the years in wars to carry messages in code without the enemy to discover and understand them, that’s why today we will be telling you that almost every cipher code in the whole world can be decoded just by you, obviously if the pattern is known. So now you just need to read this to understand the first Cipher codes and how to solve them. One of the most known was the Caesar Cipher, which was published 800 years later , by Al-Kindi. This secret message can be decoded by finding the “key’’ , in other words it means that you have to find the correct shift of letters. Therefore you need a clue based on the language the message is written in. If it is written in English, firstly you have to count which letter mostly appears in the message which you have to decode (in this case the letter that is mostly used in English is the“e”). Depending on the language yuo can count the frequency of the letters. That is why you have to see how far the fingerprint has shifted. This is called frequency analysis.
However finding the key is not to easy. To find the key, it is important to remember one thing:
This was an issue that we had to solve. However this woudn't be easy, because all the cleu's that we found are encrypted in different ways.
That´s why for solving this encrypted messages we have to use the Caesar Cipher an the Polyalphabetic/Vigenére Cipher.
In this examples you can see the "Key" (the most used letter), in the first one with red and in the other one with blue. This Cipher code is in english, that's why in this case this marked letters are an "E".
For you to learn what the different Ciphers are and what are they, we share you some videos that Khan Academy provide in his webpage.
Hi everyone and welcome back to our blog! This week we worked in Khan Academy with a new topic: defining clues with theCaesar Cypher, do you know it? We didn't until we worked on this.
So in this Blog you will find the discovery we did and the Definition of it. We hope you enjoy it!
"A lock is only as strong as his weakest point". This is very interesting, like the Caesar Cypher.
Fist of all, what is a Cipher? They are mechanical operations, known as algorithms, that are performed on individual or small chunks of letters. In this case, we don’t need a codebook. Instead, we follow a series of instructions, also known as an algorithm. The algorithm requires one piece of shared information known as a key.The letters in the alphabet are mapped to a different letter, like they are shifted X steps to the right or to the left, changing the meaning. The letters in the alphabet are mapped to a different letter, like they are shifted X steps to the right or to the left, changing the meaning. Now is known as theCeaser Cipher. Now is known as theCeaser CipherThe Ceaser Cipher was a algorithm that used by Julius Ceaser around 59 B.C. He shifted each letter in his military commands in order to make them appear meaningless if the enemy intercept it.
To make the challenges that Khan Academy had for us, we had to do someresearchabout what Cipher is and the difference between Cipher and Code. This two are the most famous encrypted systems. Also we had to pay attention to the videos and watch it many times to clearly understand how did it worked.
Also we found other tipes of Ceaser Code but they usednumbers instead of letters.Other tipe was that the letters had different shifting of each one. An example is like one letter you have to shift it three steps to left and another one five steps to the right. So it is much complicate to decipher.
Here is a very interesting and useful video to discover keys and clues with the Caesar Cipher:
Last lessons we have been working with Khan Academy with the exercises in “Cryptography challenge 101”. Here we had to decode texts that were written with the “Caesar Code”, “Vigenere Code”, and so on. First we had to find out what each code was. To help us we watched some videos that showed us how each code was created. We followed clues that put our knowledge into practice. In the following text we will give you some tipps about how to locate a keyword. The keyword is like a password, it is a path to the solution. Without it you would not be able to decode the texts written with the “Vigenere code”. This word can indicate you the answer of the problem. Vigenere cipher is a poly-alphabetic substitution system, created by Blaise de Vigenère. Using generally a key and a table, it allows the replacement of a letter by another one, which is not always the same. There may appear some problems. Finding the key, is not as easy as it seems. To do so, it is important to remember one thing: locating information and paying attention to the video.
In order to solve all the problems that showed up, we used some strategies that were very useful. Some of them were the videos that Khan Academy offered to us, the hints that were below the clues and some extra information from Google.
The define skills were very important for us to reach the solution. First of all we had to find the problem and then we were be able to solve it. You have to be very focused on what you need. To discover you have to analyze the situation step by step. Once you identify the problem, the solution will appear easily. It is not as complex as it seems. Do not be afraid! Try at least once to solve the clues, you will have a great time.

We hope you enjoyed our post. Stay tuned for more!
Hi there! Last NTYCX lessons we have been working on a topic called ''Cryptography''. We used the website Khan Academy for making different activities and challenges. The challenges consisted on decoding texts using the ''Caesar Code'' and the ''Vigenre Code'' method. The first step was trying to find the code written as a text. Each clue was written in a specific code and we had to figure out which method it was and how to solve it. Obviously, we needed help and explanations, which were provided by our teacher and Khan Academy.
Here is a video where itis explained how to use the Vigenre Cipher:
Discover Stage:
Defining Stage:
For solving all the problems that appeared in the clues, my partner and I decided to take different ways for solving the problem. For example we used Khan Academy videos and the helps that were given with the clues.
Firstly, for the define skills it is very important for us to have a solution for the problem. First of all we had to find the problem and then, as we find it, we were be able to solve it. Although, you have to be very focused on what information you will need. On the other hand, for the discover you have to analyze the situation carefully and doing it step by step. Once you identify the problem, finding the solution will be easier. It is not as complex as it seems. You dont need to be a proffesional! Try at least once to solve the clues, you will have a great time.
In this post we re going to present an very interesting piece of audio created using the programm Audacity (you can easily download this awsome application in you computer, wether its Mac, Windows or Microsoft) We will present you an originl Interview talking about JavaScript and DOM. We learned about this topic in the very recomended Webpage Khan academy, so if you want to learn more about any topic you want ( Math, Geographie, Biology, Computer Programming and more) you should give it a try. You will be amazed!!!! Before we start, let us tell you our experience with Audacity: It is a very easy programm to understand, but you have to get used to it first. So we recommend you to practice a bit before recording the final Audio. And now, let us show you the magic of Audacity!
