Last week our teacher asked us a very simple question: What is a computer? The first thing that came into our minds was to google that question or just simply describe what was in front of our eyes. BUT we were all wrong!
Our teacher later explained us, that there are 2 different ways to ask that question.
The first is just starting with "Who...?", "What...?", "Where...?" or "Why..?", in our case "What is a computer?" and the answer would be "A computer is a device that accepts information and manipulates it for some result based on a sequence of instructions, on how the data is processed". Where does this answer lead us to? Nowhere! This is called thinking convergently, questions that lead you to that specific answer. It is a basic level of thinking.
This takes us to the divergent questions also called open ending questions. They allow us to create many variations of an answer and they even helps us to ask more questions that start like "How could...?", "What might...?" or "Supposing...". An example would be "Could a computer be conscious?", that question could leads us to another question like "Could that lead to it controlling us?" or any other you think of, you have no boundaries, so just think outside the box.
To understand this concepts we created a Mind-Map that helps us compare both ways of questioning easier, convergent questions are in a violet bubble and divergent questions are in a light-blue one. Mind-Maps can simplify the organisation of information.
In conclusion: For me divergent questions are the best ones, because they help you explore different aspects of reality and exercise your mind, but maybe you will need a convergent question to start thinking divergently, so basically, they complete each other.
I hope this post will help you get out of your comfort zone and answer life's questions in a different way.
Stay tuned!☺
